“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham.” (Mat 1:1)

With head held high, and with pride, the Holy Spirit introduces Jesus as the “Son of David” and “Son of Abraham.” The Messiah of the universe gets tagged with the names of two erring human beings. Oh yes, you might have sung ‘Father Abraham’ and ‘Dance like David’ and revered them as saintly stars in the Bible, but hello, if you cut the legalistic vein and get real, this is what you would’ve thought of them if they lived today:

David, a king who killed a soldier and married his wife. Nah, this is worse than the Bill Clinton controversy. The church didn’t leave any stone unturned when we lashed out at the former US president during the Lewinsky scandal. You kid me not, we would have stationed ourselves as moral police at every social media junction, and ripped to shreds, this leader David, who had the audacity to sleep with another woman and even kill her husband.
Headlines would have read: “Adultery, Deception and Murder: President David shamed country.” We would have been discussing his wicked strategies in our living room over chai with family, neighbors and of course on social media – hash tagging #Davidshamescountry #DavidBathshebascandal #shameaffair

What about Abraham!? The Newshour Debate with Arnab would be yelling out in your ears: “Millionaire sells out wife to save his life: When will men treat their women right!”
Remember the infamous story, not taught in Sunday School, about Abraham sheepishly lying through his teeth that Sarah was his sister and not his wife just so he could save his life!

“And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.” (Gen 20:2)

Let’s not mince words here. When it says he ‘took her,’ it means he took her to be in his harem. Sarah would have undergone some beauty spa treatments before the king sleeps with her. We know how serious his crime was as the Lord shut all the wombs in the house of king Abimelech. No one treats a woman like that, and God would not let his daughter be ‘taken’ again. And no, in this movie of Taken-4, she is wilfully given away by the husband and not kidnapped.

The Spirit does not conceal the crimes committed by David and Abraham, and yet they were labelled ‘a man after my own heart’ and ‘friend of God’ and the New Testament confers the most honourable title by introducing the Son of God as the “Son of David, the Son of Abraham.”

Their sin was dangerous, but the grace that covered them was out of proportion to their sin*. This is what it means to be “presented faultless” before God; sin is covered by the blood completely and God only sees us as righteous. As pastor Zack Cherian says, “God does not see you in your condition, he sees you in your position.” That’s why God never labels them compulsive liars, deceivers and adulterers. He looks at them as sons, and bestows favor upon them, openly and publicly.

God actually tells Abimelech to get prayed over by Abraham, the prophet! (Not Abraham, the liar)

And he doesn’t mind being tagged with them! Earlier in the Old Covenant also, He is known as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Need I tell you about Jacob now?

God endorses you
When a big brand like God attaches his name to a person, He is endorsing him. It is what Shahrukh Khan does as he endorses the exotic Tag Heur watch. His name is now tagged with the watch and whenever he wears it, he is highly recommending it to everyone!

Beloved, God engraved you on the palm of his hand, and he highly recommends you, approves of you and stamps his sigEndorse22nature over you, with pride. Just the way He endorsed Jesus on this earth, He endorses you. He backed up his Son at every turn and openly declared – “this is my Son whom I love, with Him I am well pleased” even before Jesus did a single miracle.

When God endorses you, it is called unmerited favour – because you cannot pay him to do it, His son Jesus paid for it on the cross. As new covenant believers, we are under the dispensation of grace or unmerited favour. Can you imagine your favourite celebrity declaring out loud that he is a friend of yours in public?

God-tagged
This Christmas season, enjoy the pleasure God feels for you as he tags his name to yours. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joy (put your name there).
He is not holding your sin against you or finding fault with you or labelling you according to your sin. He treats you like His son Jesus.

I’m holding my three-month-old baby as I write this. Even before she learns to speak or do anything for me, I’ve decided that my favor will always be with her and I will proudly endorse her everywhere I go, just because she is mine.

God endorses you just because you belong to Him.
